Transport Group is a New York-based, Off-Broadway theatre company that creates risk-taking, thoughtful productions of plays and musicals that widen the lens on the American experience. Through new works and boldly reimagined revivals, we bring artists and audiences together to explore the evolving idea of American identity. Our work embraces unexpected perspectives, challenges theatrical conventions, and invites deeper understanding of who we are and who we might become.

OUR WORK

Transport Group creates theatre at every stage of its life: developing original plays and musicals, producing fully realized new works, and reimagining classics through a contemporary lens. Our mainstage productions pair ambitious storytelling with inventive staging, nontraditional casting, and bold design.

Through the Joanna & Steven Sanders New Works Program, Transport Group makes a sustained commitment to original plays and musicals, supporting writers and creative teams from the earliest stages of development through full production.

The Anne L. Bernstein Concert Series transforms Carnegie Hall into the setting for one of Transport Group’s most anticipated theatrical events of the year. Broadway’s brightest stars and a full orchestra perform landmark scores in their original orchestrations, as they were written and intended to be experienced. Each concert allows longtime fans to hear beloved music with its original richness restored, while introducing new audiences to these works in their full glory. Expansive and exhilarating, the series makes the history of American musical theatre thrillingly present.

Across all of these programs, Transport Group connects the history of American theatre to its future by preserving significant work, developing new voices, and creating space for artists and audiences to encounter familiar stories in unfamiliar ways.

coMMUNITY OUTREACH

Transport Group’s Emerging Theatre Makers program welcomes early-career arts professionals into a free, open community where they can learn, connect, and explore pathways into the field. Through mixers, conversations with established professionals, and access to Transport Group’s artistic process, the program helps the next generation of theatre makers build knowledge, relationships, and a sense of belonging.

Through our ongoing partnership with the New York City Department of Education, Transport Group also provides public school students and educators with access to performances, rehearsals, and behind-the-scenes experiences. These opportunities foster deeper engagement with live theatre while introducing participants to the many artistic and professional pathways that bring a production to life.

HISTORY

Co-Founded in 2001 by Jack Cummings III & Robyn Hussa, Transport Group is currently run by Cummings as Artistic Director and Executive Director, Denise Dickens. The company began in Manhattan’s East Village, where its first eight seasons were produced in residence at the historic Connelly Theatre on East 4^th Street.

Transport Group’s inaugural production, a 2002 revival of Thornton Wilder’s Our Town, in which the roles of George and Emily were portrayed by actors in their 60s and the Stage Manager was played by a 12-year-old girl, established an artistic approach that would define our company: rigorous engagement with American writing and theatrical choices that encourage audiences to see familiar stories anew. In the decades since, we’ve build a body of work encompassing world premieres, new plays and musicals, radical revivals, commissioned projects, and large-scale concert events.

Beginning with the 2009-2010 season, Transport Group expanded beyond the traditional proscenium and began creating environmental productions in spaces ranging from a Chelsea penthouse and a SoHo commercial loft to a West Village gymnasium. We have since produced throughout New York City at venues including The Duke on 42nd Street, Abrons Arts Center, The Space at Irondale, The Gym at Judson, Classic Stage Company, The Brick, and Carnegie Hall.

Transport Group’s work has been recognized with a special New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award; Drama Desk, Obie, Outer Critics Circle, Off-Broadway Alliance, and Dramatists Guild awards; and numerous nominations, including a Tony Award nomination. Together, these productions and honors reflect an enduring commitment to challenging artists, surprising audiences, and expanding the possibilities of American theatre.
